Steel Maxum was a stripper and the former wielder of the Helmet of Nabu who held the mantle of Doctor Fate. He was removed from the position by the Lords of Order after the "Get Out of Hell Free" card was stolen from the Tower of Fate by Knockout and Scandal Savage.

Origin[]
When on his workout session jogging up a mountain, Steel Maxum was chosen by the Lords of Order to be the next Doctor Fate (apparently, because Steel was in good physical condition). The Helm of Fate then appeared through a portal and was given to Maxum. Fate used his mystical powers to both protect order and gain personal satisfaction from his mission.

At some point, Steel developed a romantic relationship with the Silver Banshee, eventually showing her the location of the Tower of Fate.
Two months later, Maxum was found drinking in a bar. Unbeknownst to him, Scandal Savage and Knockout planned to use Steel to obtain the "Get Out of Hell Free Card" from the Tower of Fate. Having taken an interest in the latter, Steel blindly took them to the Tower, expecting to be rewarded. He and Knockout shared a romantic moment, but Maxum became suspicious of Scandal's apparent disappearance. After finding Scandal, Steel raced to get his helmet but was intercepted by Knockout. The three entered a fight, and Maxum was rendered unconscious in the process.
After regaining his consciousness, Steel found the "Get Out of Hell Free Card" missing, but the rest of the Tower of Fate intact. He was confronted by Nabu, who then striped Steel of his power and removed him from the Tower, without giving Maxum a chance to explain the situation.
Meeting the Suicide Squad[]
He was later found by the Suicide Squad in a strip club, taken to the woods and on the run from Zoom, and roasted marshmallows with them while he told them his origin and how he became Doctor Fate. Afterwards while on the road, he got kicked out of the vehicle by the Task Force X team, as he was no longer of any use to them and was left stranded in the middle of nowhere half-naked. He was later about to be arrested by a patrolling police officer on the freeway, but Eobard Thawne and his goons found Maxum, who was powerless and alone, then kidnapped him. His fate remains unknown.
